Who You Are.
Who are you?
Honestly. Who do you think you are?
What have others said about you?
I’m a youth pastor and every week I have the honor of loving on and investing in teenagers with the chief goal of helping them realize who they are in Christ. We live in a culture that has a crazy view of identity. People are more confused about who they are than ever before. It’s sad. It’s an epidemic. And I want to tell as many people as possible that who you are isn’t what others say or what the world says. Who you are is who God says you are!
God is looking at you and saying, “I hate nothing about you” (except your sin…God doesn’t love sin or evil of any kind). “We in the church have failed to remind this generation that while God is love, He also has the capacity to hate. He hates sin, and He will judge it with the fierceness of His wrath. This generation is schooled in the teaching about an indulgent, soft-hearted God whose judgments are uncertain and who coddles those who break His commandments. This generation finds it difficult to believe that God hates sin.
I tell you that God hates sin just as a father hates a rattlesnake that threatens the safety and life of his child. God loathes evil and diabolic forces that would pull people down to a godless eternity just as a mother hates a venomous spider that is found playing on the soft, warm flesh of her little baby” (Things God Hates by Billy Graham).
Honestly, I hate it when people try to tell others who they are. I’m not talking about the positive things like you are awesome, you are beautiful, you are talented…no, I’m speaking of the lies that people spread. Lies like you are a loser, you are ugly, you will never amount to anything, you should have never been born, you have no purpose, you are an object of lust, you are ________ (fill in the blank).
I’m all for encouraging people because that’s what the Bible teaches. The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 that we should “…encourage one another and build each other up…”. Our words shouldn’t be filled with hopelessness, negativity or be discouraging. Our words should encourage and build each other up. Many people are confused about who they are because of words that have been spoken over them. They’ve been sold a bed of lies. People need truth. And truth is found in the Word of God.
I’m writing this article to remind you of who you are.
Who you really are.
Of course, chances are I might not know you. But I know Someone who knows every detail about you. His name is Jesus and this is what He says about who you are. Meditate on His words. Circle them in your Bible. Arm yourself for when the lies come (because they will) and remember God hates nothing about you (again except your sin…God doesn’t love sin or evil of any kind). When I use the phrase, “God hates nothing about you” I’m referring to YOU! He’s not okay with your sin or evil whatsoever. God is holy. He’s perfect and therefore cannot be okay with evil. But YOU, yes the PERSON made in His image, He hates nothing about. Why? Because humanity has a special place in God’s heart. We are His image bearers. Nothing else created is given such honor! So, it’s justifiable to say that God truly doesn’t hate anything about WHO you are according to what He reveals in His Word! (Please don’t take that as saying He’s okay with any certain sinful lifestyle. God is not okay with sin so why would He be okay with a lifestyle of sin of any kind?)
Let’s be reminded of some of the truths of who God says we are:
You are chosen.
For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. - Ephesians 1:4 CSB
You are an adopted Son or Daughter of the King of kings.
He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will… - Ephesians 1:5 CSB
You are redeemed.
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace. - Ephesians 1:7 CSB
You are sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.
In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed. - Ephesians 1:13 CSB
You are known.
I chose you before I formed you in the womb;
I set you apart before you were born.
I appointed you a prophet to the nations. - Jeremiah 1:5 CSB
